Get to Know Us
The vision for Waste Not Want Not was inspired by the noble acts of two artists, Athena Robles and Anna Stein, whom I have never met but whose work deeply moved me. In 2009, an article by author Pilkington told the story of Athena and Anna’s “free store” in New York City. Their shop operated on a simple principle: shoppers could take what they needed—without paying a cent—as long as they obtained a receipt before leaving. No money was exchanged, yet the store thrived. Both women agreed that the overwhelming support for this model proved just how powerful community generosity could be.

As I reflected on their story, I began researching the cost of goods in charitable stores here in Arkansas. What I found was troubling: high prices in secondhand shops, rising unemployment, persistent poverty, and an increasing number of teenage parents struggling to provide for their children. The need was clear, and I could no longer ignore it.

On my daily walks—even now—I notice how many perfectly good items people throw away. I believe, as I did then, that we have more than enough food and clothing in North Little Rock, in Arkansas, and across America to ensure that no one goes hungry or without adequate clothing—especially during the harsh winter months and especially mothers with young children.

So, I began by asking friends, family, neighbors, and community members to donate clothing rather than discard it. Time and again, the response was positive. People loved the idea of giving directly to others, knowing their donations would reach those in need at no cost.

Today, that spirit continues through Waste Not Want Not. We invite you to join us in this fight against waste and want. Together, we can ensure no one is left hungry, unclothed, or forgotten—and perhaps even take steps toward sheltering the unhoused, making a difference, and creating a better world for all.
